Help with My Personal Questions

As you cannot answer my personal question, who can?
(UK relevant - Questions on tax matters, and on employment terms and conditions)
(Updated 7 June 2009)

As explained in the Frequently Asked Questions for Employees - Conditions of Use, PayPerShop does not give advice about personal matters. PayPerShop provides information; you must go elsewhere for guidance and advice on personal issues.

Most of the questions sent to PayPerShop relate to difficulties with employers.

Tax matters

You should visit or phone the HMRC office that holds your tax records. This should be your current employer's tax office. However, if you have recently changed jobs, your records may still be with your former employer's tax office.

For help in finding your local tax office, see the FAQ How can I find the name and details of my tax office?

Employment terms and conditions

If you have a grievance or problem relating to any aspect of your relationship with your employer, or previous employer, always read your "contract", i.e. any document that your employer has given you explaining the terms and conditions, before talking to anyone. Those documents may well explain why your employer has acted in a particular way. If you employer has never given you any documents, you should ask your employer for the "written particulars" of your terms and conditions.

When you understand the problem clearly, you may have one or more of the following options:

(1) If your employer provides a legal helpline, or you have an insurance policy that provides such a service, talk to them.

(2) If you are a member of a trade union, speak to your shop steward or other official, or contact the union's helpline.

(3) Call in at, or make an appointment with, a local legal advice centre. You can look for your local centres in Yellow Pages. Local authorities often provide such services. A national chain of advice centres is run by the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). You can find information about the CAB here and here.

Do you need further help?
First of all, see if you can find more information by searching elsewhere in PayPerShop. If that does not help, you may be able to obtain an answer to your question through the PayPerShop Forum. To use this service, please go to PayPerShop Forum.

At the top of the Forum homepage, click "Register", read and agree to the terms and conditions, and enter your name, email address and password in the "Registration Information" section. You may use your real name or a nickname. Also, indicate under "Preferences" if you would like to be sent an email when someone posts a reply to your question.

You will be sent an email immediately asking you to confirm your membership of the Forum. When you have responded, you will be able to post your question. Simply enter your question in the "Personal Employment Questions" section, the third forum down from the top of the page. One or more of the PayPerShop correspondents will then respond to your question. This is a public forum, so please do not quote any information that you feel is personal.
