The Inland Revenue has given some preliminary figures to the DTI of the take-up of paid paternity and adoption leave for the 2003/04 tax year. The figures are based on a sample of the P14 returns for that year, although the full analysis not expected to be available until February 2005.

The estimate is as follows:

  • 79,210 employees claimed SPP and received £;16,350,117, an average of £;206.41
  • 2,199 employees claimed SAP and received £;3,777,228, an average of £;1,717.70

As the maximum weekly rate for SPP is £;100 and the maximum period payable is two weeks, the average payment appears to be too high. Perhaps the final figures will be clearer.
