Employers who are applying for a work permit under the Business and Commercial Scheme Tier 1 (simplified) or Tier 2 (detailed) application procedures may make use of the new application fast path for employees requiring a National Insurance number.

The new process allows the employer and employee to complete a postal National Insurance number application form instead of the employee having to visit a Jobcentre Plus, Jobcentre or Social Security office for an Evidence of identity interview.

A similar scheme is available for:

  • NHS professionals who are recruited from overseas and

  • certain EU nationals working in the UK for an employer using the work permit process and who are employed in categories compatible with work permit holders in the Business and Commercial Sector Tier 1 or Tier 2.

For information about the fast path schemes, employers can contact Fast Path Internet Enquiries on 0845 641 5047 / 5048 / 5049, or by email to glasgow.ccufastpathadmin@jobcentreplus.gsi.gov.uk.

The DWP's guidance page Applying for a National Insurance number has been updated with details of this new arrangement.

The Department for Work and Pensions has published statistics that include the number of overseas nationals (formerly known as migrant workers) that were allocated NI numbers. During tax year 2002/03, 272,000 overseas nationals were subsequently allocated an NI number after entering the UK. The figures do not indicate the number of overseas nationals who have remained in the UK.
