For employers wishing to test the accuracy of their payroll system or to give staff practice in performing gross to net calculations, HMRC's volumes of payroll test data are a useful tool. The tests are provided particularly to help payroll software developers check that their systems give accurate results, but they have other practical uses within the payroll department.

The three volumes of test data that apply to the Payroll Standard Accreditation Scheme have been updated for tax year 2006/07 and may be downloaded from HMRC's Online Services website. A fourth volume provides additional test data for some areas of payroll business that are not covered by the current version of the Payroll Standard, i.e. NICs aggregation, SAP and SPP for adoptions.

The Payroll Standard sets out the standards that must be met by software developers seeking official HMRC accreditation for their payroll systems. Version 7 of the Standard has been published but the changes are largely cosmetic:

• the requirement for payroll systems to make payments of Working Tax Credit is removed
  
  
• all references to "the Inland Revenue" and "the Collector of Taxes" are changed to "HM Revenue and Customs"
  
  
• all links to "www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk" are changed to "www.hmrc.gov.uk"
  
  
• a few minor textual changes are made.
