A couple have each been ordered to do 180 hours Community Service and to repay £;2,500 in instalments after pleading guilty to dishonestly obtaining Tax Credits worth over £;9,500. They pleaded guilty to making six fraudulent claims for Working Families' Tax Credit.

The story is unusual in the way that the fraud came to light. The husband had a full-time job but claimed that he was working part-time for a local gangmaster. The couple gave fictitious earnings details that were below the National Minimum Wage. The case was referred to the local NMW unit for investigation and they, in turn, passed on the case to the Inland Revenue Special Compliance Office.
