In his 2004 Budget, the Chancellor announced the creation of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). HMRC will integrate the activities of HM Customs and Excise and Inland Revenue, with responsibilities that will encompass the collection of taxes, payment of tax credits and border control.

The Inland Revenue has announced the appointment of Steve Lamey as Chief Information Officer (CIO) of HM Revenue and Customs. The CIO position is a board level appointment with responsibility for reshaping and integrating the two departments' IT functions in order to support HMRC's reform agenda.

The Government will be legislating to establish HMRC as soon as Parliamentary time allows. Pending legislation, Mr Lamey will be CIO of HM Customs & Excise and Inland Revenue.
