Small and medium-sized enterprise statistics - Analysis published for 2005

The Small Business Service (SBS), an executive agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, has published Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Statistics for the UK 2005. The following figures provide a view of the whole UK economy, including Government and non-profit organisations.
There were an estimated 4.42 million enterprises in the UK at the start of 2005. After excluding sole proprietorships and partnerships comprising only the self-employed owner-manager(s), and companies comprising only an employee director, the number of enterprises with one or more employee was 1.25 million.
Almost all of the 1.25 million enterprises (97.0%) were small (0 to 49 employees). Only 29,735 (2.37%) were medium-sized (50 to 249 employees) and 8,240 (0.66%) were large (250 or more employees).
At the start of 2005, UK business enterprises employed an estimated 24.69 million people, and had an estimated combined annual turnover of £2,443 billion.

There were an estimated 4.36 million business enterprises in the UK at the start of 2004. Excluding sole proprietorships and partnerships comprising only the self-employed owner-manager(s), and companies comprising only an employee director, the number of enterprises with one or more employee was 1.23 million.
Almost all of the 1.23 million enterprises (97.0%) were small (0 to 49 employees). Only 28,820 (2.33%) were medium-sized (50 to 249 employees) and 8,200 (0.66%) were large (250 or more employees).
At the start of 2004, UK business enterprises employed an estimated 24.35 million people, and had an estimated combined annual turnover of £2,339 billion.
SMEs together accounted for nearly half of the employment (47.6%) and turnover (49.0%) in the UK.
Small enterprises alone (0 to 49 employees) accounted for 37.5% of employment and 35.2% of turnover.
