Student loan deductions - HMRC published results of an employer satisfaction survey

Between January and March 2006, Ipsos MORI conducted a telephone survey of 1,796 employers on behalf of HMRC to measure the extent of employer's understanding of, and satisfaction with, the Student Loan Deduction (SLD) system. A detailed analysis of the results has now been published.

One in eight employers interviewed had some involvement with the SLD system, the majority of whom were satisfied with it - only 2% expressed dissatisfaction. Of those who had contact with the system, 88% said it had little impact on their organisation's workload and similar proportions regarded the system as being easy to set up and maintain. With regard to the information provided by HMRC on SLDs and the accuracy of the information contained in the SL1 Start Notice, the proportion expressing dissatisfaction was 4%.

Of the few problem areas highlighted, the report suggested that there is scope for HMRC to increase employers' understanding about SLDs, particularly in relation to more detailed features of the system, such as the role of the P45 in SLDs, and the consequences of failing to implement SLDs.
