The Department of Taxation has announced a paperwork reduction measure to eliminate unnecessary mailing of withholding booklets and booklets for other taxes. The cost saving measure will eliminate mailing these booklets to taxpayers who are not active filers and have had no filing activity since January 1, 2004. Each taxpayer potentially affected will receive a letter explaining the booklet mailing change. Anyone receiving the letter who wishes to continue receiving booklets should follow the instructions in the letter to mail or fax required information to the Department.

The Department of Taxation emphasizes that this action is a reduction of unnecessary mailing only, and does not suspend or cancel a taxpayer's identification number or account. A taxpayer who fails to file required tax returns or pay required Hawaii taxes may be subject to civil or criminal penalties, or both, in addition to the tax, statutory penalties, and interest.

The due date requirements for employers required to make their withholding remittances semi-weekly have been amended to reflect the federal three-day banking rule. The change allows every employer, required to remit the Hawaii state withholding tax (SWT) on a semi-weekly schedule, to have at least three banking days following the close of the semi-weekly period to remit the SWT. The announcement includes a new due date payment schedule.
