State News: Indiana - Tax Amnesty shows early results

One week into the Indiana Tax Amnesty program and the Department of Revenue has received more than $11.8 million from delinquent taxpayers in cash payments and payment-plan commitments. More than 11,400 taxpayers have contacted the DOR inquiring about the program since it began on September 15.

The amnesty program is targeted to collect $65 million by November 15, 2005, the closing date for the amnesty period. Research into other states' amnesty efforts showed that 80 to 90 percent of the total taxes collected came in the last few days of the program.

Those delinquent taxpayers who do not take advantage of amnesty will face double penalties and more aggressive collection efforts, which will include legal action.
