Government employees queue for pay
More than 5 000 government employees had to queue at the department of Accountant General to collect their pay cheques following the introduction of a new computerised payroll system. The new system uses Omang numbers for identification and officers whose numbers have not been submitted or are invalid, are to be paid by cheque instead of bank transfers.

Payroll system to expose ghost workers
The new computerised payroll system for government employees introduced this month will help to investigate the possibility of ghost workers in the public service. Gobona Mapitse, Secretary for Budget Administration in the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, said "I am not ruling out the possibility of ghost employees in the civil service, but the new system would give us a clue as to how to carry out investigations".

Mapitse indicated in an interview with the Botswana Press Agency that some officers who at one point got a departmental transfer received salaries from two different departments, while in some cases some paying officers manipulated the system to prepare double salaries for themselves.

The new system uses Omang number for identification of government employees. Officers whose Omang numbers have not been submitted or are invalid will be paid by cheque instead of bank transfers. However, all cheque payments will be kept by the Department of Accountant General and their owners can only collect them on presentation of validated Omang numbers.

Mapitse said uncollected cheques would result in the concerned employees' salaries being terminated and taken out of the payroll by end of next month.
