Fiji Payroll News - Ministry of Labour reports on workplace compliance visits

View the previous news item for Fiji

Enforcement of employment legislation in Fiji is the responsibility of the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Productivity.

In 2004, a total of 5,751 workplaces were inspected compared to 6,000 inspections made in 2003 where the recoveries amounted to $1.1 million. The reduction in the recoveries to $370,000 in 2004 is attributed to the high degree of compliance shown by employers after initial discrepancies were identified by the Ministry and corrected.

In contrast, the amount recovered during the settlement of complaints lodged with all of Fiji's Ministry of Labour offices increased from $270,000 in 2003 to $440,000 in 2004.
