Three cases were reported in the past week by the Labour Department where employers had failed to pay employees their wages within seven days of the expiry of the wage period or of the termination of employment. The fines in all cases exceeded the amount of wages that had been due. In one case, the employer was fined HK$15,000 in respect of a failure to pay HK$1,300 by the due date.

The maximum fine for failing to pay wages due within seven days of the last day of the wage period or of termination of employment is $200,000 and imprisonment for one year.
