Some changes have been made to parental leave entitlements that come into effect from 1 December 2004. These changes will mean that:

• employees can access parental leave payments and leave if they have worked for the same employer for the immediately preceding 6 months or immediately preceding 12 months before the expected date of delivery or adoption of a child for
  • an average of at least 10 hours per week, including
  • at least one hour in every week or at least 40 hours in every month.

• the duration of parental leave payments increase from 12 weeks to 13 weeks
  
  
• one week's partners/paternity leave is available for employees who have worked for the same employer for the immediately preceding six months.
  
  
• teachers employed by school boards of trustees and eligible junior doctors will be entitled to count certain multiple employments as a single employment in determining eligibility.

These changes apply to employees whose baby is due or born on or after 1 December, or who start caring for a child they intend to adopt on or after 1 December.
