Subject: Obtain a National Insurance Number

How do I obtaining my National Insurance number if I'm not in the UK.
Facts about myself:
USA citizen
Live in the Cayman Islands
Married to a British citizen
I have my UK Settlement Visa valid for 2 years
Now I must obtain my National Insurance number and I understand the process can take 2 weeks.
Question: Can I receive my NI number while in the Cayman Islands?
(via on line, over the phone, etc?)
I would like to have my NI number so I can start looking for a job from outside the UK.

Subject: Statutory Maternity Pay

We had an employee who was entitled to SMP.
This employee's Expected Date of Confinement was 10th Feb 2008 & she was going to start the maternity leave on 10th Feb 2008.
On 31st Dec 2007, she left our company to start a new job with another company sometime in Jan 2008.
Are we liable to pay this employee any SMP ?

Subject: Student loan deductions query

Hi,
I work for an employment agency and have received an SL1 (Student Loan Start Notice) for someone on our payroll.
This 'employee' used to be a PAYE employee when he worked for us previously.
However, he is now paid as a Ltd Company (i.e. he submits an invoice with his timesheet; we pay him against the invoice and we leave him to sort out his tax/NI etc).
I believe that this SL1 form was probably sent to us based on the fact that he was previously a PAYE employee. If we don't take Tax/NI from him now he's a Ltd Company then surely it's not our place to take off Student Loan deductions. Is this correct?
