27 February 2009 – Phoenix Medical Supplies, a UK distributor of pharmaceutical products and services to community pharmacists, dispensing doctors and hospital pharmacies, is paying tribute to COA Solutions’ human resource (HR) and payroll system (www.coasolutions.com) for helping the company to move from a combined payroll to a monthly payroll. The benefits realised from this project include 33,600 less payslips produced and postage costs reduced from £61,000 to £28,000.

Editorial for Newsletter #352

The saga of the opt-out from the 48-hour average working week continues with the publication by the European Commission of its view of the amendments to the Working Time Directive passed by the European Parliament in December. Despite a willingness to compromise on a number of issues, the Commission is still resolved to reject any move to abolish the opt-out, despite the Parliament’s obstinate commitment to phasing it out. This story could go on for years yet.

New Double Taxation Agreements and Tax Information Exchange Agreements with the Isle of Man, the Netherlands and France have been approved by Parliament and the Statutory Instruments were made on 11 February 2009. They will enter into force when the respective countries complete their legislative procedures and will take effect for income tax purposes from the start of the next following tax year in each country.

On 16 December 2008, the European Parliament voted in favour of amendments to the European Working Time Directive that would, among other changes, phase out the opt-out from the average 48-hour working week. By so doing, the Parliament rejected the common position that had earlier been agreed by the EU Council of Ministers.

Republic of Ireland: The Labour Court - Hairdressing Joint Labour Committees

On 10 February, the Labour Court gave notice that it had made Orders abolishing the Hairdressing Joint Labour Committee and the Hairdressing (Cork County Borough) Joint Labour Committee. In their place, a further Order has been made establishing a single Joint Labour Committee in relation to certain workers employed in the Hairdressing Sector and their employers.
