The Minister for Labour Affairs, Dara Calleary, has proposed bringing the Joint Labour Committee and Registered Employment Agreements systems into line with the procedures already established under the National Minimum Wage Act, 2000 that allow individual employers to submit “inability to pay” claims to the Labour Court for adjudication.

An Employment Regulation Order (SI 215) has been made, fixing the statutory minimum rates of pay and statutory conditions of employment of workers within the scope of the Law Clerks Joint Labour Committee. The Order is effective from 22 June 2009 and relates to office managers, law clerks/bookkeepers, legal secretaries and office assistants.

The two Catering Joint Labour Committees, one representing workers in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, the other representing workers elsewhere, have given statutory notice that they have formulated proposals for fixing the statutory minimum rates of remuneration and conditions of employment of chefs, cooks, waiting staff, clerks and general assistants. The last pay increases came into force on 1 November 2008.

The Law Clerks Joint Labour Committee has given statutory notice that it has formulated proposals for fixing the statutory minimum rates of remuneration and regulating the statutory conditions of employment of office managers, law clerks/bookkeepers, legal secretaries and office assistants. The last pay increases were agreed in 2007 and came into force on 3 April 2007 and on 3 April 2008.

On 10 February, the Labour Court gave notice that it had made Orders abolishing the Hairdressing Joint Labour Committee and the Hairdressing (Cork County Borough) Joint Labour Committee. In their place, a further Order has been made establishing a single Joint Labour Committee in relation to certain workers employed in the Hairdressing Sector and their employers.
