It is still not clear if and when the pending improvements to maternity and paternity leave and pay will be introduced. The primary legislation is in place, there has been extensive consultation, but rumours abound that the government will not implement them in 2010. Nevertheless, further European legislation is on the horizon that will, in due course, force further changes. The implications of the proposed changes to the Pregnant Workers Directive are considered in this newsletter.

By the time you receive the next newsletter, the new tax year will have started. The “payroll deadlines” section reminds you of the new PAYE procedures that you must apply, in addition to the normal year-end updates and reporting. If you intend to file returns online over the tax year end, take note of the “downtime” periods detailed in another news item.

And, after extensive lobbying, the Scottish Parliament has bowed to the pressure and revoked the Regulations that would have caused much confusion in applying Scottish court orders – although many of you may already be confused by the Scottish terminology!
