The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has published its annual review of legislative changes, including changes to employment law.

From 1 October 2009, the following changes take effect:

  • National Minimum Wage (NMW)
    • increases in the hourly rates
    • removal of tips etc. from counting towards the NMW
    • work placements under Erasmus and Comenius Programmes do not qualify for the NMW.
  • Statutory Redundancy Pay
    • maximum weekly limit increase from £350 to £380 (with no annual increase in February 2010).

The document makes brief reference to the proposals to increase SMP, SAP and Maternity Allowance to 52 weeks and to introduce additional paternity leave from up to 26 weeks. Despite earlier commitments to introduce the improvements before the end of the current Parliament, which would require introduction from 6 April 2010, BIS now states “A date for extending maternity and paternity rights has not yet been announced”.
