Outsourcing the payroll function can help organisations to embrace the latest flexible working regulations, says ESOS, one of the UK’s leading payroll providers.
On 6th April 2009, the right to request flexible working was extended to parents of children aged 16 and under, meaning a further 4.5 million people will now be able to ask for flexible working patterns.
As a result more and more organisations are likely to come under increasing pressure to offer flexible working practices to their employees. But ESOS says many organisations have not considered the additional payroll administration that will be required should they choose to accept requests.
This is most likely where hours change every so often to meet outside commitments (for example where a working parent changes their hours to match school holidays) or where a full-time job becomes a job-share.
In certain instances a change in working pattern will require contractual changes to be made, while salaries may need to be adjusted to reflect potential changes to working hours.
Likewise, if the change is only a temporary measure, the payroll administrator must remember to return the payroll back into its original configuration.
Dave Cooper, Managing Director at ESOS, says: “While the benefits of adopting flexible working practices are clear in terms of increased productivity and employee satisfaction, the challenge for management is to ensure that it is able to effectively manage its impact on payroll.
“Outsourcing to a specialist provider could be a worthwhile option because the payroll can be configured to the organisation’s requirements and adapted quickly to cope with change. Likewise employees are fully trained to understand how the latest legislative changes affect the payroll directly and indirectly.”
ESOS offers a host of payroll solutions including bureau and fully managed services as well as short –term Maternity Cover and Pay-As-You-Go options.
