From 6 April 2009, the right of carers to request a variation of their employment contract to help them care for a child under age 6 is extended to cover carers of children under age 17. This change is made by means of a single replacement sentence in the relevant regulations.
No other changes to the flexible working provisions have been introduced. The provision that already applies to carers with disabled children under age 18 is unchanged and there are no changes to the carefully defined procedures that must be followed by both employers and employees.
