The Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) described Microsoft’s plans to stop selling its Office Accounting service and turn off its hosted payroll software 10 days before Christmas as “a potential disaster”.
Businesses that have registered for Microsoft’s Office Accounting service will still be able to use it, but the software will no longer be updated to show changes in legislation, such as the upcoming adjustment of sales VAT from 15% back to 17.5% come 1 January 2010. As a result, these companies will need to find new ways to pay their employees in a very short space of time.
Elaine Gibson, Senior Policy and Research Officer and Manager of Strategic Academic Qualifications of the IPP, said: “It is really bad timing for Microsoft to be shutting down its hosted payroll software so close to Christmas considering a number of organisations that use this service pay their staff earlier in December.
“The situation is a potential disaster for payroll departments that need to honour their company’s contractual pay date obligation as the implications for possible late payment are far-reaching – not only for employees who need to be paid on time but in relation to compliance with HM Revenue & Customs’ deadlines.”
