IPP Announce Theme for National Payroll Week 2009
The Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) is encouraging businesses to recognise the invaluable contributions their payroll professionals have made during the recession by celebrating National Payroll Week.
This year payroll departments up and down the country have experienced their busiest period ever.
Since the start of the recession, extra work and pressure has inevitably been placed on the desks payroll departments. Subsequently employees have had to be efficient in areas such as redundancy calculations, salary reductions and contract changes - areas which may previously have been unknown territory.
In light of this, the IPP is encouraging organisations to celebrate National Payroll Week (NPW) from 7 - 11 of September and promote this year’s theme ‘Payroll Counts, People Matter’, which aims to celebrate the important role which payroll professionals have played within the business, especially during these tough economic times.
Lindsay Melvin, CEO of the IPP, says: “This year’s theme for National Payroll Week, ‘Payroll Counts, People Matter’ was a natural choice. Over the past year the recession has placed an enormous amount of pressure on the shoulders of payroll administrators, and often it is only during these tough times that people really appreciate the work payroll departments undertake. This year’s National Payroll Week is a great chance to say thanks.
“NPW is the most opportune time for employees within an organisation to get to know their payroll department in an informal and fun atmosphere. Employees are encouraged to take an interest in their payroll throughout the week, and ask any questions they may have about payroll matters.”
This year’s theme also aims to encourage organisations to look after their employees to ensure that they remain loyal when they pull through the recession. By investing in their development, organisations can help individuals to reach their full potential for the benefit of the business.
The IPP is using NPW as an opportunity to promote its training programmes in a bid to help payroll administrators develop their skills and improve their knowledge of legislation and employment regulations.
Lindsay Melvin adds: “During times of economic uncertainty more than ever it is essential to have a competent, skilled workforce. Payroll professionals have to be proficient in all areas, so it is vital that they have the most up-to-date knowledge and skills.”
NPW is a vital part of the payroll professional’s calendar, as it helps to raise awareness for the important role payroll plays in the everyday lives of the UK’s workforce, in business and the wider economy. It is also an ideal opportunity for employees to provide suggestions to their organisations on the numerous ways that they can invest in their futures through payroll.
To make the most of the week, the IPP is asking payroll professionals to carry out activities that will raise awareness of their role and the payroll profession as a whole. Whether you stage a party or open day, host a question and answers session or intend to raise money for a local charity, the IPP would like to hear from you.
A promotional pack suggesting activities and ways for payrollers to get involved can be requested from the Institute of Payroll Professionals by emailing npw@payrollprofession.org.
