Bates of London, the leading laundry servicing the capital’s top hotels and restaurants, is looking to the latest technology to ensure it controls costs in the potentially difficult times ahead.
The company has recently acquired the leading edge, multi site Time & Attendance solution from Keytime, replacing its outdated Computime system.
With 300 employees, Bates of London turned to Keytime to ensure it maintains a strong grip on labour costs – as well as conforming to Health & Safety regulation – to maintain maximum competitiveness.
Bates of London has come a long way in the laundry field since Martha Bates started to take in bag wash in Islington back in 1886.
Today the company that still bears her name operates on three sites - its headquarters in Leyton, a new facility in Chelmsford and in Enfield where it recently acquired Aqua Laundry.
A family firm to this day, the current direct descendents of Martha who can be found at the helm today are Managing Director Matthew Pantlin and his father and Chairman, David Pantlin, who have overseen the company’s 15% year on year growth since 2000.
And both attribute the company’s success to maintaining the same attention to detail and personal service offered by Martha Bates more than 120 years ago.
That means Matthew is more than happy to take a phone call from a hotel housekeeper or restaurant manager at any time of day or night.
“If they have a problem they know they can contact me any evening and we will do something about it,” he says. “Not many MDs are that accessible . . .”
But how will Bates of London cope with the uncertain times ahead.
“Naturally no one really knows what’s going to happen,” says Matthew Pantlin. “We just have to see whether the London hotels and restaurants experience a downturn which will affect us.
“However we have a good reputation for service and, just as importantly, keep a close eye on costs – hence the purchase of the Keytime Time & Attendance system – which will hold us in good stead for whatever lies ahead . . . “
