A new schedule of allowances for magistrates (Justices of the Peace) in England and Wales, who are not paid for their absences by their employers, took effect from 1 May 2009.

The rates for employed magistrates are set at 80% of those rates in order to reflect the 20% basic rate of tax. Magistrates are also entitled to claim travelling and subsistence allowances.
