Redundancy - BERR updates employer guidance

Hi! If you're new here, you might want to register for free email updates. Just use the form at the top of the sidebar. Thanks for visiting The Payroll Blog!

The practical guidance document for employers on redundancy, published by BERR, has been updated and makes reference to the increase in the maximum statutory redundancy rate to £350 from February 2009.

However, when the previous version was republished in September 2008, we suggested to BERR that the reference in the document to outdated HMRC 1996 guidance on payments in lieu of notice in Tax Bulletin 24 should be replaced with a link to the current guidance in the Employment Income Manual. Unfortunately this change has not been made and we have written to BERR again on the matter.

We suggest that readers handling redundancies currently review HMRC’s up-to-date information on the tax status of payments in lieu of notice, at the link below.
