The Department for Work and Pensions has published all of the benefit rates that will apply from 6 April 2009. As with the recently-announced tax allowance and NICs threshold increases from that date, the rates are being increased by 5%, i.e. the rate of retail inflation at September 2008.

Statutory Sick Pay: From 6 April 2009, the 2008/09 weekly SSP rate of £75.40 is increased by 5% and rounded down to £79.15. Daily rates are shown in the following table.

Statutory Adoption Maternity and Paternity Pay: From the first payment week starting on or after Sunday, 5 April 2009, the standard weekly SMP/SPP/SAP rate of £117.18 is increased by 5% and rounded up to £123.06. The daily rate is £17.58 exactly.

The weekly rate of maternity allowance also increases to £123.06

Among the qualifying conditions for SSP, SAP, SMP and SPP is the requirement that an employee’s average earnings over the eight-week relevant period be at least equal to the National Insurance Lower Earnings Limit. This is £95 per week from 6 April 2009. There is no requirement for employees to have paid Class 1 NICs.
