I previously worked for a public owned company. Being under Sarbanes Oxley regulations, a payroll coordinator would not key or adjust their own hours. I am now working for a private company and will soon be adjusting hours in payroll. Does anyone know if there is a problem with my adjusting my own hours? Should someone else be doing that for my hours? I am not sure how this is going to work out.
I guess that I have just moved from a highly regulated environment (with lots of audits) to one that isn't highly regulated.
I am also wondering if anyone knows of a good source for basic payroll laws.

The principle of not adjusting your own hours is absolutely correct and I wish more payroll offices had that discipline in place. It is not a matter of not being trusted - the operation should be above reproach.
If your new employer expects you to change your own hours, I suggest that you keep your own record of the changes you make and get one of your colleagues, or your boss, to check and countersign the change. You need to keep some evidence that your changes have been double-checked so that nobody had question your procedures.
You have posted this in the US section so I presume you are looking for US payroll information. I used to report on changes in the US but it got too much for me to do in addition to the UK news. Currently I subscribe to CCH's newsletters; they are free and you can subscribe at http://tax.cchgroup.com/email/default.htm?cm_sp_o=1wuf%20EzMbTzfbBECjCHFzbk%20-kwyfl%20zEp%20WwclkwffwylCjC4zbE%20FwEA
Sorry about the weird link, why can't websites use sensible page references? Otherwise you can subscribe to the services provided by the American Payroll Association, at http://www.americanpayroll.org/members/ _________________ Ian Congreave, PayPerShop owner
