Here's a question from one of our readers:
I started work a month ago. How soon should I apply for an NI number? Are there any legal restrictions on how long I can take before applying for one?
Hope someone can help.

If you were born in the UK you should have had a NI number automatically allocated to you on or around you 16th birthday. Child Benefit records are used for this. If you didn't receive the NI number card in the post your employer can get it traced for you by getting you to complete a CA6855.
If you have recently started to live in the UK I believe you need to contact the Department for Work and Pension.
