Hi Everyone

I am writting requesting your help on my paye situation.

The details on my payslip (weekly) are:

Tax Code/Basis: BR C
N.I Nş./ Code: XX123456A A

Gross Pay: £333,5

DEDUCTIONS:
TAX: £66.60

I would like to know whether i have been doing the right ammount of deductions.

My situation is, I am working as a full time and i havent had any previous job in UK neither in Portugal where i am from. I am in UK since August 2006.

I am studying as well on Farnborough College, doing Certificate in Marketing which is Professional qualification for 2 years. Does it affect my paye code as well?

Any information provided will be very helpfull.

Kind Regards

Welcome to the PayPerShop Forum and thank you for posting your question. I took the liberty of concealing your actual NI number.

The calculation on your payslip is correct. Tax code BR means that you are paying 20% tax on all of your earnings. The code usually means that HMRC believes that you have another employment, with which you have a normal tax code that provides you with your tax free pay, such as 543L. Your college course does not count as employment and, as you state that you do not have any other employment, you are currently paying too much tax. You should arrange to have your tax code corrected.

I suggest that you ask your current employer for the phone number of their tax office and call to discuss your current situation. Once the tax office has enough information, it will be able to issue a new tax code to your employer and you will then get the excess tax refunded.

Hi Ricardo

I would also like to point out that if the NI number as quoted is what appears on your payslip, then you need to apply to the local DSS for a National Insurance number, as the one you quote is obviously a temporary number made up by your empoyer. However, that doesn't affect the amount of National Insurance you pay.

Cheers
Mary

As I mentioned in my response, I changed the NI number from Ricardo's actual number, in order to disguise it.
