I was wondering if anyone knows of a free do it yourself payroll.
It is only for me, I hope it would be easy. I use quickbooks for
the business. Haven't taken any pay out of it yet - thought I would
before year's end. Quickbooks payroll in $199 extra besides the
original program. I am in the US in Michigan.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks,

Vonni

Dear Vonni,

Thank you for your enquiry. We will be highlighting it in our next Newsletter and asking our US subscribers to read your question and make some comments.

As I have already mentioned in our earlier email exchange, I suspect that the complexity of US payroll, with federal, state and some city withholding taxes, and federal and state payroll taxes, will make it unlikely that there will be a free online payroll service for very small businesses - but I hope I am wrong.

In the UK, many small employers do payroll manually, using forms and tax tables provided by the Inland Revenue. I believe you have that option. I have found instructions for small businesses at

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p583/ar02.html#d0e982
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15.pdf

I cannot see any reference to forms provided by the IRS for recording week by week or month by month records of deductions. Perhaps visitors can help with this - does anyone keep manual records and, if so, how? Are there record forms that can be purchased?
