Post Natal Time Off

Postby Jennym254 » 06 Mar 2008, 09:18

Another hypothetical question :-

A woman returns from Maternity Leave on 1st February (at the end of week 22 of her leave, so while still in receipt of SMP). The following Wednesday books a whole day for postnatal checks for herself and the baby.

Do we have an obligation to pay her for this time off - it was after all her choice to return early.

Post natal time off

Jenny,

Do you make these up or if not you seem to collect a very interesting type of employee?

I don't know of any rule regarding post natal time off and I think, generally, we would all assume, maybe wrongly, that all of this would take place within the initial maternity leave period.

My view, and once again I am more than willing to be shot down and proved wrong, is that this is a doctors or other medical appointment and the fact it is being portrayed as a post natal issue is actually irrelevant now that she is back at work.

I would say that your employer ought to treat this like any other appointment and if these are generally paid extra time off so be it. If not then isn't it a days holiday?

Ian, I'm told if I keep laughing that I will be diagnosed as mad! No I don't make them up, they are perfectly real I am afraid.

On this one I was quite prepared to say "not fair".....but you happen to agree with me :D
