I have been around payroll for sometime now and have tried to figure out where is the best place to learn Payroll?? On the job training is slow, but you do get hands on experience. Learning from books have never been easy for me, but I would try it if it would help me do a better job and get ahead of the task of doing payroll and filling tax forms, and Magnitic Media and someday soon, OnLine filling.
So my question is where to start learning Payroll Processors and the task of the job?
I have heard of the America Payroll Assoc. and the Pay Train Training, but is it good or is there another place?
So any help in guiding me into a training program for someone with work experience behind them would be greatful.
Thanks

The Americal Payroll Association is the major body supporting payroll in the US, it seems to be very successful in training and, from what I have read about the e-learning courses they offer, this seems to be a good way of learning all about US payroll.

Unlike the UK, where there are a number of independent businesses offering payroll training, there does not, as far as I can see, appear to be any other business offering payroll training across all of the states.

Having said that, the IRS offer online payroll training, it starts from the very basics, but only tackles federal taxes. The address is http://www.irs.gov/app/understandingTaxes/

In our next newsletter, we will have a small feature asking US readers about their experiences in obtaining payroll training.

Thank Ian,

I did notice that most of the topics were for UK, but I didn't think things were done different from here in the US to UK.
But Thanks for the tip on the IRS I didn't know that was available.

I look forward to see more on you forum.

Geremy,

We would all agree that learning the role as we do the job is one of the most important and rewarding ways of developing.

I would have to, however, advocate caution in relying totally on this for payroll/HR or any other professionalism no matter which side of the atlantic you may be on.

Both in the UK and the USA the work of the payroll practitioner gets ever more complex and technical as each year goes by and whilst unqualified but experienced payrollers are still worth their weight in gold the trained and qualified practitioner is increasingly needed.

I would urge anyone planning a career in payroll to examine all the available opportunities for education and training in order to ensure they can deliver at their very best.
