Edmonton...Alberta's Information and Privacy Commissioner has ruled that Doctor Dave Computer Remedies Incorporated breached the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

The Commissioner held an inquiry into allegations from two former employees of the company that their personal information, including names, home and e-mail addresses and home phone numbers had been disclosed on websites, to other employees of the organization and to third parties, without their consent.

Information and Privacy Commissioner Frank Work has ruled that the company violated several sections of PIPA, including;

• Sections 1 (a) and 4(3) (business contact information)
• Sections 1 (j), 18 and 21 (personal employee information)
• Sections 17 and 20 (personal information)
• Sections 7, 8 and 9 (consent)
• Sections 16 and 19 (limitations on use and disclosure)

In his ruling, the Commissioner found that Doctor Dave's purpose for using the personal information of the complainants was to encourage unwanted contact with the complainants.

The Commissioner has ordered the company to immediately halt this practice.
