Beware of individuals claiming to be endorsed by the Tax Office offering financial advice

May 2006

The Tax Office today warned people around Australia to be wary of individuals who claim to be working on behalf of the Tax Office, offering retirement income or other financial or taxation advice.

Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo said that the Tax Office has become aware of people wrongly claiming to do so on its behalf.

"Anyone who fraudulently claims they are authorised by the Tax Office to provide such advice is breaking the law.

"We have already received a number of reports that suggest this activity is not confined to any one area within Australia and we are working with State and Federal Police to stop it," he said.

"As identity crime is increasingly an issue, people should be extremely wary about providing their personal or financial details to others.

"Anyone who has been approached by an individual claiming to act on behalf of the Tax Office should phone 13 28 61 without delay.

"We will seek to investigate such matters and take appropriate action."
