Topaz Presents 'Payback To Payroll' Winner With Inaugural Bursary Fund
July 2007
Topaz has presented a 'payback to payroll' to Debby Irwin who has become the inaugural winner of a £4,000 Bursary Fund for a Diploma in Payroll Management.
Debby is the payroll supervisor at Gardner Denver with responsibility for the weekly, monthly and director's payrolls and company insurance, pension administration, fleet accident management and PA support to the Finance Director.
Having spent 18 months performing payroll supervisor duties at the Gloucester offices of the internationally recognised leading provider of compressed air and gas, vacuum and fluid transfer technologies to industries throughout the world, Debby jumped at the chance to apply for the Topaz Bursary Award - but was surprised to win it!
"It came as a real shock when I found out that I was the winner but it was also wonderful at the same time," says Debby, who lives in Cheltenham.
Debby took on her current position at Gardner Denver after being made redundant by her previous employer, following a takeover. She is now keen to build on her payroll experience that she gained ten years ago, as part of a dual role, before concentrating full time on administration management following the company's rapid growth.
"The Bursary Award is a fantastic opportunity and I'm delighted that it will help enhance my payroll qualifications," says Debby.
"This is something that you don't normally hear of and everyone in the office is very pleased for me. My 22-year-old daughter was also over the moon when she heard I had won the funding for the Diploma course."
The winning nomination was endorsed by Sue Kendrick, Gardner Denver Finance Director, who revealed that the course will not only benefit Debby but also the company.
"We believe Debby is a worthy winner and this qualification will provide the necessary technical payroll expertise that we currently support her with," says Sue.
"Debby is very enthusiastic to learn and so I had no hesitation in endorsing her nomination. I believe this course will improve her confidence and will also boost her future prospects within the company."
The Topaz Bursary Fund follows a link up last year with the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) to cover a Bursary winner's fees for training on the Diploma course, which is scheduled to begin in September.
"Our Bursary Award funding will be a commitment to Debby for two years and I would like to congratulate her on being a deserving first winner of this funding," says Keith Brown, Topaz EMS Business Development Manager, who has been spearheading the initiative.
"As a leading supplier of Topaz EMS Payroll software we wanted to make a 'payback' to a sector on which we have in part built the Topaz success story by forging a unique association with the IPP.
"Topaz has a philosophy of not just being interested in supplying software, but also wanting to make a difference for the people that use it and since we launched the Bursary scheme at Softworld last year our initiative has received a lot of positive feedback from the payroll sector.
"We are now delighted to be providing a fantastic opportunity for Debby to develop her qualifications without the financial implications of the Diploma course fees."
